- Figure and field are different hues at matched luminance, so the luminance channel has no edge to find. Isoluminance is display-dependent, which is why calibration comes first.
Almost everything you would call seeing a shape is done by one channel, and that channel only reads brightness. Give it an edge and it will find the letter, the face, the kerb, the movement. Take the brightness difference away and leave only a difference in hue, and it has nothing at all to work with. What is left is the colour system, which is slow, coarse and roughly a tenth as sharp.
So a message written at matched brightness is not hidden behind anything. It is sitting in the open, in a part of your vision that is bad at reading. The luminance-only view is the proof: switch to it and the plate turns into flat noise, because that grey noise is exactly what the shape channel was receiving the whole time.
Calibration comes first because matched brightness is not a fact about the file. It is a fact about your panel, its gamma, the light in the room and your own retina, and the standard coefficients everyone codes against are a population average that describes nobody exactly. The stripes let you find your own match: slide until the border between them stops looking crisp.
The dot-to-dot brightness noise is doing real work too. Real plates have it, and it is scattered across the message and the background alike, so it carries no information about where the message is. What it does is drown whatever calibration error you have left, which is the difference between a plate that works for one viewer and a plate that works for a room.
This is a toy, not a test. Genuine Ishihara plates are diagnostic instruments with validated designs, printed to controlled colour on paper, and read under specified light. Not seeing a word here means the plate is hard, your screen is unusual, or the calibration slider is off. If you actually want to know about your colour vision, that is a conversation with an optometrist.
