Monshun Sales sat on the Pat McAfee Show set Friday afternoon, told the country he was staying home, and in doing so handed Curt Cignetti something Indiana football has never had: a five-star commitment. Not the highest-rated recruit in this cycle. The highest-rated recruit in program history. Full stop.
Sales — a 6-foot-5, 195-pound wide receiver from Lawrence North High School in Indianapolis — is the No. 1 receiver in the 2027 class and the No. 13 overall prospect nationally, per the 247Sports Composite. His finalists were Alabama, LSU, Ohio State, and Texas. He picked the school 50 minutes from his front door.
“I love Cignetti,” Sales told 247Sports in April. “He is a guy who is ready to win and is ready to work. He is not going to come in and bulls–t you. He is there for one job. He is there to win, and he’s not going to let nothing stop him from doing that.”
Sales visited Bloomington in late April, then made the rounds to his other finalists in June. The trips to Tuscaloosa, Baton Rouge, Columbus, and Austin didn’t move the needle. Indiana was still the team to beat, and it wasn’t particularly close.
Here is where you remember what happened six months ago: Indiana capped an undefeated season by winning the College Football Playoff National Championship. The same program that went 3-9 in 2021. The same program that had never produced a five-star recruit. Cignetti walked into Bloomington promising to win, and now the No. 1 receiver in the country is voluntarily joining the party.
The numbers back up the ranking. As a junior, Sales caught 37 passes for 794 yards and nine touchdowns — over 21 yards per reception. He also lined up at safety and racked up 56 tackles, because apparently 6-foot-5 receivers who run like him weren’t enough of a problem for opposing coaches. 247Sports director of scouting Andrew Ivins described Sales as “one of the biggest freak shows in the country with his hulking frame and elite athletic markers.”
Sales told McAfee his recruitment took off after Louisville offered him as a freshman, and he credited his high school coaching staff — Coach Mal, Coach Ray, Coach Wilson — for refusing to let him coast. “Ball is really life,” he said. “I wake up, breathe football. Every day. Sleep. Every day, I think it’s football, really.”
By the 247Sports Composite rating, Sales checks in at 0.9958 — the highest mark any Indiana recruit has ever received. The previous record-holder was Dasan McCullough at 0.9701 in the 2022 class. That gap is not a rounding error. It’s a different stratosphere.
Sales headlines a 2027 Indiana class that now sits at 17 commitments, including fellow Top247 wide receiver Branden Sharpe from Brownsburg, Indiana. The group ranks No. 30 nationally and 11th in the Big Ten — numbers that will climb as the class fills out, and numbers that would have been laughable in Bloomington three years ago.
Four of Indiana’s top 10 all-time recruits by composite rating are now from the 2027 class alone. Cignetti isn’t just winning on the field. He’s rewriting what Indiana football can sell.
Sales won’t enroll until 2027. He has two more seasons of high school football left. But the commitment itself — the nation’s top receiver choosing Indiana over four of the most resourced programs in the sport — is the kind of recruiting victory that changes the ceiling of a program that spent decades without one.
