Charles Barkley Rips LeBron James for ‘Stacking’ Teams, Cites Potential 76ers Move
Charles Barkley has never been shy about poking at LeBron James, and a clip making the rounds online shows the Hall of Famer dusting off his favorite critique at a timely moment.
“The number one knock on LeBron for older guys like me has always been, ‘Yo, man, you always stacking your team,'” Barkley said in the clip. “He stacked in Miami. He stacked in Cleveland. He stacked in LA. Now he’s stacking it in Philly. So that to me, I’m going to still have the same criticism I’ve always had.”
The remarks land as the Philadelphia 76ers have positioned themselves as a serious suitor for James in free agency. LeBron informed the Los Angeles Lakers in early July that he would not return for a ninth season, closing an eight-year chapter. The 76ers wasted no time reshaping their roster, acquiring Jaylen Brown from the Boston Celtics in exchange for Paul George and draft picks — a deal that immediately transformed Philadelphia into a contender and gave James a ready-made supporting cast.
ESPN’s Shams Charania reported that the Sixers “are trying to make a pitch” to the four-time MVP. Brian Windhorst noted the Klutch Sports connection — Tyrese Maxey is a fellow client — as a natural pipeline. The Athletic’s Tony Jones listed Philadelphia among the teams expressing interest.
By mid-July, the pursuit had gotten personal. NBC Sports Philadelphia reported that 76ers owner Josh Harris had a brief, friendly conversation with James on July 17 during a VIP event at Fanatics Fest in New York. Harris, along with Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, and Jaylen Brown, have all let James know they want him in Philadelphia.
That’s the kind of welcome wagon that would make any rancher suspicious — too many hands reaching for the same gate. Barkley’s point is that James has never met a stacked roster he didn’t like, from his Miami Big Three years to the Cleveland return to the Lakers’ Anthony Davis pairing. Philadelphia would be the latest stop on that tour, with Embiid, Brown, Maxey, and VJ Edgecombe already in place.
The 76ers aren’t alone in the chase. The Golden State Warriors, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Miami Heat are all reportedly in the mix, with Denver and Minnesota also showing interest. The Athletic’s John Hollinger wrote that significant league business — including potential Trey Murphy trades — is effectively on hold until James makes his call.

Barkley’s criticism isn’t new. He’s been jabbing at James for years over what he sees as ring-chasing through roster manipulation rather than grinding through adversity.
