Madison Square Garden has hosted plenty of Knicks celebrations over the decades. Saturday night produced one unlike any other — though the box score would require an asterisk the size of a championship belt.
WWE’s Saturday Night’s Main Event, held at the Garden for only the second time in the show’s history, doubled as an unofficial coronation for the Knicks. Karl-Anthony Towns emerged from a cloning machine. Jalen Brunson, cast on his left wrist from surgery, stood in the ring with World Heavyweight Champion Roman Reigns and received a custom Knicks WWE Championship belt. A Pacers point guard ran interference for a wrestler. None of this showed up in any NBA play-by-play feed, and that was rather the point.
The evening’s first Knicks cameo came during Danhausen’s match against JD McDonagh. Danhausen — the cult-favorite WWE wrestler who feuded with Stephen A. Smith during the NBA playoffs and became an “honorary Knick” — was losing a two-on-one battle against McDonagh and Dirty Dom Mysterio. He retreated to a cloning machine at the top of the entrance ramp, tossed in a stuffed cat, and out walked Towns, dubbed “KAThausen” by the broadcast. Towns delivered two chokeslams, sending Mysterio through a table, and helped Danhausen secure the win. It was Towns’ second viral sports-entertainment moment of the weekend; he was involved in the now-viral slap incident with Tom Brady and Logan Paul at Fanatics Fest on Friday.
The main event segment belonged to Brunson. Reigns introduced him as the NBA Finals MVP and “King of New York,” and the MSG crowd forced Reigns to pause his promo multiple times with chants of “MVP” and “you deserve it.” Reigns presented Brunson with a Knicks-branded WWE Championship belt. The two raised Reigns’ trademark No. 1 signal to the crowd.
Then the storyline advanced. Seth Rollins — who challenges Reigns for the World Heavyweight Championship at SummerSlam in two weeks — sent Indiana Pacers guard Tyrese Haliburton out first as a decoy. Haliburton, whose on-court rivalry with the Knicks and kayfabe wrestling rivalry with Brunson dates to 2024, distracted the pair long enough for Rollins to attack Reigns from behind. Brunson intervened, trading words with Rollins before Reigns hit his finishers.
The show closed with Brunson holding the World Heavyweight Championship and Reigns holding the Larry O’Brien Trophy — a tableau that blurred the line between sports and sports entertainment until it disappeared entirely.
For Brunson, the appearance was a natural fit. His affinity for pro wrestling is well documented, and the Garden crowd treated him like a main-eventer regardless of the script. For Towns, it was the capstone to a weekend that proved he can generate highlights without touching a basketball.
Whether any of this moves the needle on SummerSlam’s buyrate remains a question for the analytics team. But on a Saturday night at the World’s Most Famous Arena, the Knicks’ usage rate was off the charts — and the crowd didn’t need advanced metrics to tell them what they were watching.
