LeBron James is heading to Philadelphia for his 24th NBA season, and the Eastern Conference just got a whole lot uglier for everybody else.

ESPN’s Shams Charania reported Friday that James, 41, is joining the 76ers on a two-year, $8 million deal with a player option. That’s not a typo — eight million. The man who’s made over a billion dollars in career earnings is playing for the kind of money a backup linebacker makes in half a season. He wants ring number five, and he’s willing to fly coach to get it.

In a message on X, James said he thought he’d played his last game when the season ended. “I was pretty sure I played my last game,” he wrote. “I still truly love this game, and I have more to give.” Twenty-three seasons, four rings, ten Finals appearances, and the dude almost walked away. That’s either a man at peace or a man who got bored on his couch for two weeks and decided the rest of the league needed to suffer. Probably both.

Here’s where it gets spicy for Boston. The 76ers didn’t just grab LeBron. They already acquired Jaylen Brown earlier in the offseason, pairing him with Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, and rising star VJ Edgecombe. That’s a starting five that looks like it was assembled in a video game by somebody who turned off the salary cap. Vince Carter — a guy who played until he was eligible for Social Security — called the move “cheating” and wished the rest of the NBA good luck. When Vince Carter says you’re cheating, pal, you’re cheating.

Brown reacted to the LeBron news with a single hashtag on X. Maxey screamed about it on Instagram. Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro declared it “LeBron James Day” in the state, because apparently signing a free agent now warrants a gubernatorial proclamation. What a time to be alive.

For Jayson Tatum and the Celtics, this is a gut punch served cold. Brown — Tatum’s running mate, his championship co-pilot — is now wearing enemy colors on a roster built to bulldoze the East. The conference was already a meat grinder. Now Philadelphia has Embiid healthy, Maxey ascending, Brown motivated, and a 41-year-old king chasing history. No player in NBA history has won a championship with four different franchises. LeBron’s got Cleveland, Miami, and Los Angeles on the résumé. Philadelphia would be the fourth.

The 76ers’ roster is currently full, and the team still needs to shed salary to make the LeBron deal official. Bronny James is unlikely to join his father in Philadelphia — the Lakers are reportedly fond of the younger James and want real pieces in any trade. So the dream of a father-son reunion in Philly is on hold, probably for good.

LeBron may commute to games via helicopter from New York, per Charania — a 45-minute flight between cities. Only in the NBA, genius. Only in the NBA.

The pressure on Tatum is enormous now. Brown helped deliver a banner to Boston. Now Brown is on a super-team in the same conference, with LeBron James feeding him and Embiid anchoring the paint. The Celtics’ path back to the Finals runs straight through Philadelphia, and that road just got paved with bad intentions.
