Real Madrid and RB Leipzig have reached an agreement in principle for Ivorian winger Yan Diomandé, with the transfer fee expected to exceed €100 million, according to reports from Fabrizio Romano and RMC Sport. The 19-year-old is set to travel to Madrid this week for a medical and would sign a contract through 2031.
PSG, who had previously agreed personal terms with Diomandé, formally withdrew from negotiations on Sunday evening. The French club released a statement calling the asking fee and salary demands “completely disproportionate and distortive,” adding that PSG “will not break its principles of rational financial management and squad balance.” RMC Sport reported that PSG’s attempts to negotiate down the price backfired, and club executives were left frustrated by what they perceived as a shift in stance from Diomandé’s representatives despite an earlier agreement.
The numbers tell a striking story even before a ball is kicked. Leipzig signed Diomandé from Leganés last summer for approximately €20 million. A sale north of €100 million represents a fivefold return on a single season of Bundesliga football — during which the winger scored 12 goals and added 8 assists. He also debuted at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, registering one assist in four appearances for the Ivory Coast.
That World Cup exposure is the variable that inflated the price. David Ornstein of The Athletic reported on July 24 that Leipzig had pushed for a €130 million valuation. Sky Sports noted that Madrid’s initial bid of roughly €99 million (£85 million) — €90 million guaranteed plus €10 million in add-ons — was rejected. The final package, per AS, is expected to land between €115 million and €120 million, though the precise breakdown of guaranteed money, bonuses, and sell-on clauses remains unclear.
If the fee reaches that range, Diomandé would slot in as Real Madrid’s third-most expensive signing ever, behind Jude Bellingham (€127 million from Borussia Dortmund in 2023) and Eden Hazard (€120.8 million in 2019), and just ahead of Gareth Bale. Not bad company for a teenager with one full season of top-flight European football.
One caveat worth flagging: at the time of the initial reports, no German outlet had confirmed a final agreement. Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg maintained that negotiations were still ongoing. Romano’s track record carries weight, but until Leipzig or a German source corroborates, the deal sits in the “agreed in principle” column rather than “done.”
The broader Madrid picture is equally consequential. José Mourinho has returned to manage the club, and AS reports that he envisions an attack featuring Vinícius Jr., Kylian Mbappé, and Diomandé, with Bellingham operating behind them. Vinícius, entering the final year of his contract, is reportedly prioritizing a renewal — seeking around €20 million net per season — and wants to discuss his role in Mourinho’s project directly with club leadership. Arsenal and Liverpool have explored his availability should talks collapse, but AS insists both player and club remain aligned on extending the deal.
Diomandé and Vinícius share representation through agent Frederico Pena, which briefly fueled speculation about the Brazilian’s future. AS reports that connection has no bearing on Vinícius’s intentions.
Real Madrid could officially announce Diomandé as early as Monday, potentially allowing him to skip Leipzig’s preseason preparations. He would be the club’s fifth signing of the summer window.
